Wanderluster of the Week

Wanderluster of the Week. In this series we ask savvy travellers to share their stories, tips, and destination inspiration: Adam Constanza lives in Wellington, and shares his experiences at Travel Inspired – as published on Stuff in July 2016. Travel Inspired_Alaska Kayaking Where are you from? I grew up in Street. Yes, that’s right, Street. It’s a village in the southwest of the UK, which is best known for being the home of Clarks shoes. While travelling I soon learnt to say that I was from the neighbouring town of Glastonbury. There’s only so many times you can respond to the question … “street, which street?”! I now call Wellington home, where my partner and I have lived for the last 10 years and we absolutely love it. What’s your day job? I spend four days a week as a programme planner fleshing out the nitty gritty details of projects … which is kind of ironic considering that my partner does the majority of planning when it comes to our travels! In my free time I write about my trips and local adventures for my website, Travel Inspired. When did you first start travelling? My first trip was in 2002, when I came to New Zealand backpacking. I had a blast, and it’s fair to say that I was hooked on travelling. How did you get into travel blogging? I started to sketch from photographs taken during my travels, and initially setup Travel Inspired in 2014 to showcase them. It quickly evolved as I started to write short articles about my trips and had a number of them published. From there, my website became less about my sketches and more focused on articles and photos. Travel Inspired_NYC Brooklyn Arch Where or what is the main focus of your blog? To share my travel stories, which hopefully inspire people to get out there and explore New Zealand and further afield. What are the perks of being a travel blogger? Do you get paid? On a personal level it’s the drive and motivation it gives me to be active and try new things. It really does boost the energy levels and get the creative juices flowing. I do travel blogging for the love but, of course, it would be a dream come true to be able to do it for a living. Are there any downsides to being a travel blogger? My partner kindly proof reads my articles and provides honest feedback (sometimes too honest!), which at times can be hard to take. It usually means hours and hours of editing and rework, which when you want to hit publish on an article can be a real challenge. Where is your favourite place you have travelled, and why? Bolivia, Salar de Uyuni (Salt Flats). One of the most unique landscapes I have ever experienced. Salt as far as the eye can see, reflective waters, and blue skies ensure every photo will look stunning. We celebrated New Year with a group of strangers while drinking, singing, and dancing at 3,656 metres. Trust me, you don’t need too many drinks at that altitude! The next morning we visited natural hot pools and watched thousands of flamingos on the shallow lakes. Travel Inspired_Paddle Boarding HawaiiWhat’s the most memorable travel experience you’ve had? Kayaking the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. It’s the first time I’ve seen a black bear in the wild. It’s the first time I’ve had to hang belongings from a tree, so as not to attract the bear, and it’s the first time I’ve had to whistle loudly while going to the toilet in the forest, so as not to startle a bear! The wildlife on the Kenai Peninsula is incredible, we spotted sea otters, humpback whales, seals, puffin, and porpoise from our kayak. Where are you headed next? We are plotting our next trip at the moment … we have lots of potential destinations on the table at this point, but nothing has been decided yet. We do, however, have a short trip to Sydney planned in the next couple of months. What advice do you have for anyone who wants to start travel blogging? First, just get started and figure out what elements of travel blogging you enjoy. Focus on those, have fun, and remember to keep travelling and having adventures, it’s the only way to keep the stories coming! Share your top three travel tips Do your research, and know a little about your destination. Travel light. It’s such a great feeling not to have heaps of luggage! Be open-minded and talk to people.
